About Maggie Cheu
Founder & Certified Postpartum Doula
I was a lawyer in my first career. For about a decade, I practiced in Austin and New York City, always serving folks who had experienced abuse. I loved my clients, and I loved that my work allowed me to assist them in a period of major life change: leaving a violent marriage, setting down custody boundaries, making an outcry about years-long abuse, finally applying for a protective order. It was a joy and a privilege to watch my clients become empowered to remake their lives in whatever way they wanted.
With the birth of my children, I discovered that the postpartum period is also a remaking, of both the family and the self. It has such great power to be a tender, lovely time; it also has the power to absolutely break you. I feel strongly that the quality of your experience is primarily determined by the level of support you have in the weeks following the birth of your child. My goal is to provide assistance and care responsive to your family’s specific needs, so that you can feel confident, capable, and ready to grow with your new little baby.
Training: Austin Baby Guru, Giving Austin Labor Support (GALS), Advanced Lactation Management (Texas Health and Human Services), Infant Massage, CPR/First Aid.
Membership: Central Texas Doula Association, Newborn Care Specialist Association.
Services
We provide the following judgment-free, in-home services to help you rest, heal, and feel yourself.
-
New parenthood is full of feelings and tasks (and feelings about those tasks). Sometimes you need a shoulder to cry on, sometimes you need a shower and a nap, and sometimes you just need someone to move this pillow from one room to the other. We can help with that.
-
Every birth experience is unique. For both birthing and supporting parents, transitioning from pregnancy to postpartum can be joyful or harrowing, perfectly as envisioned or deeply traumatic. We want to hear from you, learn from you, and support you, whatever your journey.
-
Breastfeeding, chestfeeding, bottle feeding, human milk, formula, or all of the above - there are lots of ways to feed your baby. We would love to help you find and feel confident in the way that works best for your family.
-
Every baby has their own personality and preferences; many wish only to be attached to an adult, some prefer music and swaying, most love a good swaddle. We can discover your new baby’s unique preferences, guide you as you find out what works best for your specific newborn, and give you a few hours to take a nap.
-
Just like their parents, older children often have all kinds of reactions to a new baby in their home. Let us support you as you navigate parenting all of your kiddos and find your feet as the new (and improved) version of your family.
-
It can be hard to know what to do with a newborn, who can’t see, or move, or do much at all yet. Massage can be a sweet, soothing way to spend time with a baby; through shared touch, parents promote bonding and practice eye contact and communication with their brand new human.
-
Sometimes it’s difficult to feel that you have a handle on things when the sink is full of dishes, you haven’t had a square meal in days, and you’re out of clean baby outfits. We can help with those tasks, so you can focus on yourself and your newborn.
-
Especially if you’re expecting not just one, but two, three, or more new babies, an extra set of hands will be that much more welcome. We are glad to support you as you get the hang of feeding, diapering, caring for (and even leaving the house with!) your babies.
-
Postpartum is an emotional period, compounded by incredible hormonal changes that can affect brain chemistry in profound ways. Depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders are not uncommon. Let us help you learn what to look out for, how to identify when things aren’t right, and find the resources you need to thrive.
-
If your situation calls for medical or specialized care, we can refer you to experienced, vetted providers, including mental health professionals, pelvic floor physical therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and more.
